Story Highlights

A way for users to curate collections of stories to their profile after they expire.

During this project, I was the designer representing Facebook Highlights in an effort to create the feature across all the family of apps: Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. This included collaborating with designers, researchers, and project managers from a variety of teams to share learnings, create a consistent visual language, as well as agree on a strategy for differentiations to leverage platform strengths. As a part of this, we conceptualized the behavior of highlighted stories and archived content.

We conducted 3 intensive design sprints in 3 months, 50+ rounds of research in 4 different countries, and built and tested over 20 concepts.

Shipped on iOS, Android, and FBLite.

Story Archive

When Stories were created, they existed for 24 hours and disappeared afterwards. However, we saw behavior where users wanted to download these photos and videos into their personal camera roll.

This prompted the exploration for a fail-safe private space for users to be able to reminisce on their expired stories.

This feature gives users greater control over their content and allowed for them to create and store memories all in one location.

Story Highlights

With Archive, users were starting to collect memories that they loved. From this, we learned that they wanted a way to share certain Stories as a representation of their identity.

A user remarked, “I didn’t realize how much I loved to cook until I looked at all my archived Stories and wanted to show my friends everything I’ve made.”

Story Highlights were created as a way for people to pick what they felt was special to them and share their curated moments with my friends and family.
